King Pelias has to pay –
The usurper, the blasphemer
Is soon to fall under
His mighty blade of bronze…
Jason, twenty years strong,
Steeled by Centaur discipline
And the wisdom of the Beasts,
Has come to claim in front of all
What was by birth to be his own:
The ivory Iolian throne!
Pelias aghast feels the throes
Of his powers as they wane
Struck by the young prince’s
Keen, commanding voice…
“Lift the curse from Colhis”
Pelias challenges the boy.
“Put to the rest Phrixus’ shade
Together with the Golden Fleece
In a many-oared trireme
And burn them in the open sea –
So that the land may prosper again…
Then the throne shall be yours!”
CALL OF BLOOD!
IN THE HEROES’ VEINS
HE EMBRACED THE TRIAL IN A KINGLY WAY
AND VOWED TO GO FORTH
Thus he swore by Zeus an oath
And Jason sheathed his blade;
He embraced the trial in a kingly way
And vowed to go forth and set his sail
Where no man before had ever dared,
Unknowingly falling in the old king’s snare…
In a many-oared trireme ...
