Paradox - Escape from the Burning

"In 1244 during the sacking of Montsegur two knights protecting the cathar heretics were entrusted with a mission. A vision appeared before the pair telling them to take and make safe a sacred artifact. The artifact reveals itself as part of a Roman lamp in the shape of a fish."

A vision not reality
A spirit shape within the pyre

Find the token, look past the fire
It will be within these walls
Shining it will guide us to it's part within this tale
What secret it holds will be shown to all

Now we must flee here
Our work is done
Saving these people

The end of our searching
Has brought us to this
A piece of a roman lamp
A bright glowing relic in the shape of a fish
This is the token to take into the night

This was not our normal calling
We were paid to stand and fight
To leave this place without protection
Would result in great loss of life

Our plan to leave the mountain
Would set us on a dangerous path
First we must traverse the ramparts
To caves that shield us in our flight

Taking nothing but the relic
We forged to clear our way
Through swords and spears we fought
Throughout the dying day

We left all the holy people
Who had no choice but to stay
Our hearts were torn and sad
As we passed them on our way

On entering the darkening caves
A guiding light shows us the way
Our relic glows with ethereal flame
The caves as light as day

Not time to eat
Not time to sleep
We rushed on through the night
Far from battle but far from safe
no thought given to our deadly plight

Racing through tunnels so narrow and tight
No one to guide us save for the light

Reaching for safety with each rasping breath
Our journey mysterious with no end in sight
On reaching the cave mouth deep in the night
We rest to sustain ourselves for further flight
