Louis Armstrong (1901-1971)
Właściwie Louis Daniel Armstrong (pseudonim artystyczny Satchmo lub Pops), amerykański trębacz jazzowy, wokalista i kompozytor tego gatunku, urodzony 4 sierpnia 1901 roku w Nowym Orleanie, zmarł 6 lipca 1971 roku w Nowym Jorku. Odegrał znaczącą rolę w historii jazzu. Dzięki swoim umiejętnościom muzycznym oraz błyskotliwej osobowości przekształcił jazz z prymitywnej muzyki tanecznej z murzyńskiego getta na niezwykle popularny na całym świecie gatunek muzyczny. Wyróżniał się swoim stylem gry na trąbce i swoją wokalistyka jazzową, do której wprowadził śpiew scatem. Urodził się w biednej rodzinie w Nowym Orleanie w stanie Luizjana. Właściwie nigdy nie miał ojca, a jego matka była prostytutką. Na początku uczył się grać na kornecie (podobny do trąbki instrument popularny wśród nowo orleańskich muzyków) w grupie New Orleans Home For Colored Waifs. Uczył się od Bunka Johnsona, Buddy Petita i Joe „King” Olivera. W roku 1922 wyprowadził się do Chicago, gdzie został zaproszony przez Joe „King” Olivera do gry w jego Creole Jazz Band. Dokonywał tu swoich pierwszych nagrań, grając drugi kornet w tym zespole. Potem prowadził własne zespoły Hot Five i Hot Seven. W latach trzydziestych XX wieku nagrywał z Big Bandem Fletchera Hendersona oraz własnym. Po II Wojnie Światowej prowadził mniejsze zespoły pod nazwą All Stars. Kilka ciekawostek dot. tego artysty:
1/ Jego imieniem nazwany został amfiteatr w Iławie, w którym co roku odbywa się Międzynarodowy
Festiwal Old Jazz Meeting „Złota Tarka”.
2/ Jego nagranie A Kiss To Build A Dream On pojawiło się w nitro do gry Fallout 2.
3/ Odbył tournee artystyczne, podczas którego odwiedził kilka państw afrykańskich. Właśnie wówczas
doszło do krótkiego spotkania artysty ze słynnym polskim reporterem Ryszardem Kapuścińskim.
4/ Występował często w duecie z Ellą Fitzgerald.
Zmarł na atak serca w 1971 roku w wieku 69 lat. Został pochowany na cmentarzu Flushing w Nowym Jorku.
