They hardly got paid for their labours

The need to survive
Barely kept them alive
But a dream that they had wouldn't die

A dream that a life worth the living
If they had the courage to go
Was theirs for the taking and everyone said
There's a heaven beyond the rainbow

And out there beyond that illusion
With a fair wind they might just get through
Maybe they'd find their heaven on earth

Then came the man with a promise
Of a better life over the sea
The way would be tough
But if you paid enough
With God's will you would be free

Free to bring up your children
In a land with no trouble or strife
And not have to suffer the way it is now
With life on the edge of a knife

And out there beyond that illusion
With a fair wind you might just get through
Maybe you'd find your heaven on earth
Or a hell if the dream don't come true

And while they survive
The dream's still alive
For the world's refugees
But braving the road
To a far better life
Comes with no guarantees

Then comes the point of decision
To live or to die in that place
They have no voice so they have no choice
Though they might disappear without trace

But off they go into the darkness
Not the first and they won't be the last
Dance through the ages and history's pages
Our lessons are learned from the past
